B. J. Harrison Reads Rain

"Rain" is a short story by Somerset Maugham in which a missionary attempts to convert a prostitute and lead her away from her sinful life. The story takes place on a ship, which drops anchor on the Pacific island of Pago Pago. An epidemic of measles breaks out, and the ship cannot leave the port before everyone is checked. One of the passengers, Miss Thompson, is an insolent red-light-district professional, and Davidson, the missionary, takes it to heart to save her soul. A powerful short story of Christian values and a man’s mistaken beliefs, "Rain" is a tale of sin and misunderstanding, criticising hypocrisy and fake ideals. It one of Maugham’s most masterful stories.

Somerset Maugham (1874-1965) was a British playwright, novelist, and short story writer. He was one of the most popular British writers of the 1930s. He worked for the British Secret Service during the First World War, but never stopped writing. Many of his stories share his personal experiences in this field. His best known works include the novels "Of Human Bondage", "The Painted Veil", and "The Moon and Sixpence", as well as several short story collections.

B. J. Harrison started his Classic Tales Podcast back in 2007, wanting to breathe new life into classic stories. He masterfully plays with a wide array of voices and accents and has since then produced over 500 audiobooks. Now in collaboration with SAGA Egmont, his engaging narration of these famous classics is available to readers everywhere.
